Starting from woolen carpets from Shanpulu, Xinjiang, and Khotanese documents, this paper suggests that the original Khotanese name of Shanpulu reads Sūmapau?a, a monk who sacrificed his life to be a dragon for the temple, whose legend was included in the Tibetan Li yul lung-btsan-pa. In the Khotanese documents S.2471 and Ch 00267, Sūmapau?a was in the dragon group and was believed in by local people. Sūmapau?a is the origins of the place name Shanpula or Shanpulu, i.e. Tibetan Sum-pon and Uyghur Sampul. The Chinese names “山普鲁”或“山普拉” are transliterations of this Uyghur name. It is obvious that a same name was transliterated in three different languages.
